About DogTag

Since 2005

Founded in 2005, DogTag has been dedicated to providing top-quality care and services to every dog that comes through our doors.  Originally started in a horse barn, demand for DogTag's services quickly outgrew that space and the "home next door" was purchased and thoughtfully converted into a boutique care facility with hand-built kennels and extensive outdoor play yards.

Our Mission

DogTag aspires to offer the best dog care services in the Rocky Mountains. We build our programming and services with the sole intention of doing what's best for the dogs and their families.

Core Values (PAWS):

  • Personalized Care: Every dog known by name, with attention to their unique needs and personality.
  • Active Environment: Quality outdoor time, natural "pack" socialization, and stimulating enrichment in a safe setting.
  • Warm Community: Twenty years of trust built on treating pets as family members, with a "home away from home" feel.
  • Superior Experience: Committed to offering the best dog care services in the Rocky Mountain region.

Our Team

Our team of experienced and certified trainers, handlers, and groomers have a deep love and understanding of dogs, and work tirelessly to ensure they receive the best care possible.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at frontdesk@dogtagco.com or (720) 317-8414 if you cannot find an answer to your question.

DogTag was founded by local Superior residents and is staffed by locals.  The DogTag facility is actually a converted residential home set on 2 acres of land, just past CostCo - so truly it is a "home away from home" for your family dog.  We are a smaller facility, which means we know our dogs & owners by name, we are able to hand select which dogs play together, and we can make personalized recommendations for your dog based on what we see with him/her every day. We are not a 300 dog facility from the 90's designed to take your money.  We are a small, white-glove facility designed to provide the best care for our dogs. Please feel free to drop in any time to see the facility, or even to check if we have local fresh eggs or produce at the front desk!

We specialize in small group daycare and boarding, where our dogs play outside with each other, or follow our structured enrichment activities that help "tune up" your pup's obedience and intellect. For 100% of our clients, their time with us becomes an essential weekly outlet for their socialization and well-being. Your dog will come tired - but a tired pup is not enough! They need pack socialization and intellectual stimulation to really exhaust their canine energy, and we provide that in intentional settings aimed at your dog's needs. Please find more details at boarding or daycare.

We also offer full grooming services, as well as in-home drop-in or overnight sitting.

We really love all the dogs that come in to stay with us, and we've built a safe process for handling dogs that are admitted to our community.  Because of this, we evaluate every single dog prior to accepting it for service - you need to know if we can provide the care your dog needs, and we need to know that our existing dog citizens will be safe admitting your dog.  You would want the same once your dog is here!  We require a thorough one day evaluation, where we will supply you with your dog's report card and readiness for our services. This evaluation costs $50 and comes with a free full day of daycare, in addition to the personalized report card.  At the end of this evaluation, you will either be offered the dates of your choosing, or suggestions for what we would like to see next from your dog prior to services.  Don't worry - there are no tests or anything you'll need to prepare for! But this is a full day evaluation, so drop off is from 7:30-8:30am (earlier than most drop offs), and we do only accept about 100 new dogs per year (that's less than 2 per week) to ensure that admitted dogs receive the best possible care.

DogTag was founded by Superior resident Donelle Slater, a professional animal trainer with a previous career at Sea World in California.  The business was then bought by an existing client, Chris Nunes, also a Superior resident, who boarded his Rhodesian Ridgeback Oso with Donelle and Jesse right after the Marshall Fire. General Manager Jesse Rutz left a previous GM role at City Bark, preferring the small format of DogTag that ensures better dog safety, staff satisfaction, and personalized service.

All of DogTag's services are designed to make our dogs' lives better, and to make everything easier for the owners who love them. We know what it's like with a busy house of kids, dogs, maybe even contractors working on a kitchen, and we strive to take all of your dog-related overhead off your shoulders. So we design enrichment activities and treats that a myriad of dogs will respond to, and make sure they get the exercise they need while they're here with us.  Please also refer to our Core Values (PAWS) up above.

As active dog owners and outdoor enthusiasts, we believe it's important that dogs spend a significant amount of time outdoors with each other. We also live in a dynamic weather environment, so outdoor time will often be impacted by heat, rain, or snow. But generally:

    • OPENPLAY DAYCARE: each dog will spend approximately 6-7 hours outside in groups of no more than 15 dogs.
    • ENRICHMENT DAYCARE: This is more challenging and stimulating, so each dog will spend 5.5-6 hours outside in small groups of 3-5 and larger groups of 10-12, depending on the activity.
    • BOARDING: During boarding or extended boarding stays, dogs will eventually become overstimulated by their friends and neighbors and we've noticed fatigue and tempers start to flare around the 5 total hour mark.  Outdoor time is spread across at least 3 different periods of 1-2 hours each. If we notice that your boarding dog is not running up against this wall, we will often recommend some additional activities to tap into their energy.
